DRAMAGIRLS
The Dramagirls Mentoring Program pairs fourth through eighth grade girls from Chase Elementary School in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood with women artists in an intensive exploration of creativity and leadership. Through one-on-one mentorship, instruction in a variety of art forms, and public performance, the program offers a safe environment for girls to create original works of theater that express the truth of their lives. Participants use Redmoon’s unique form of Spectacle Theater which incorporates design building, art-making, movement, and performance to author stories about the rituals and traditions of their everyday experiences. Through these mechanisms girls learn to value the power of their own voice, increasing their confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills.
SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
In 2004, Redmoon Theater entered into a long-term partnership with Audubon Elementary School, a Chicago Public School located in the city’s north side. The partnership pairs professional artists from Redmoon Theatre with teachers at Audubon School to develop vibrant fine-arts curriculum that is fully integrated with the school’s academic program. The goal of the program is to create meaningful and effective learning opportunities for students and teachers by integrating the tenets of Spectacle Theater such as ritual, song, precession, image making, and symbolic movements into the classroom, the school and the community at large.
Redmoon teaching artists currently provide two hours per week in each of the school’s first, third seventh and eighth grade classrooms. As a way to further promote the depth of the students’ scholastic and artistic learning, a common theme of “Nature in the City” was established to guide lesson plans and become the basis for the school-wide Spring Spectacle performance.
Redmoon Theater’s Neighborhood Arts Program Department (NAP) seeks an experienced Production Manager for two Community-based Spring Spectacles. The Production Manager will work directly with the Neighborhood Arts Programs Director and Redmoon Teaching Artists to manage the production needs for the Dramagirls and Redmoon School Partnership performances.
