As the most recent addition to The Princess Club, I joined the cast solely for the rehearsal process. Since late last year, Jim, Vanessa and the rest of the princesses had been in workshops for the show and had developed a language and style of physicality all their own. I did my best to enter their world; a world of wild wigs, high heels and outrageously bizarre curves.
We spent much of our rehearsal time creating the framework of the show, first focusing on the larger pieces of our story, the fairy tales, and then working together to discover the transitions and scenes in between. We focused on three traditional fairy tales as the sort of centerpieces of the show: Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Rapunzel. The first two stories already had a clear framework in place, but the Rapunzel story proved to be more of a challenge. We tried a variety of different angles into the story, playing with each other and deconstructing the scene until we finally hit upon our current, and undeniably Princess Club version of the classic fairy tale. In this spirit, we developed the show that we now take into our upcoming week of tech rehearsals.
This week, I look forward to watching The Princess Club bedazzled with the elements of light and sound. The artistic staff and designers will put their finishing touches on the beautiful objects and original music and hopefully, we will perform a show that will be just as strange and wonderful to watch as it was to create.
